AWEC is a non-profit women led national organization, established in 1991. AWEC focuses on reducing vulnerability and building capacities among marginalized communities with special focus on women and children. AWEC’s first project after establishment was starting a high school to provide education for the Afghan refugee children in Islamabad, Pakistan in the year 1991. This school was started with community contributions as a primary school and after delivering quality services to the Afghan refugees children the community requested the schools developed to high school.Afghan have lived with war since 1979. The conflict continues today. Over three million people, mostly women and children, had to seek refuge in neighboring countries. A large number of Afghans came to Islamabad, Pakistan.They came from many different backgrounds, some from very poor families. Others from the middle class, came to Islamabad because most of them wanted education for their children, especially for their girls.Afghans lost their homes, their family members, their jobs, their friends, their culture. One of the greatest losses has been education. A generation has grown up uneducated. Even before the war, education was very limited, especially for girls and women.

AWEC demonstrates its commitment to the inclusion, protection and empowerment of Afghan women and children, with a particular focus on vulnerable groups, striving towards attaining their human rights and gender equality by:
Increasing women’s role and influence on decision-making in government, organizations and the private sector, at both local and national levels;
Increasing women and girls’ awareness of their rights and improving their access to education and other key social services;
Identifying socially excluded groups of women and children and providing them with essential services and helping them organize to influence stakeholders by facilitating, engaging, and mobilizing community groups and civil society organizations; Building the capacity of CSOs and government duty bearers to effectively address the rights and needs of women, children and vulnerable groups.
